The book focuses on Stephen Lawrence's first steps, Stephen Lawrence family, friends, his feelings, his school life, his love of music and aspirations. The book makes readers see how much they have in common with Stephen Lawrence and it is hoped that it will move them to do what they can to put an end to prejudice and racism.

Stephen Lawrence's tragic and brutal death caused Britain to look at race more closely than it had even done before. Stephen Lawrence's parents, devastated by their son's death and horrified by the injustice surrounding the murder, brought a private prosecution. Although the private prosecution was not successful, it triggered a Public Inquiry into Stephen Lawrence's death commissioned by the Home Secretary.

One of the recommendations of that inquiry was that 'Consideration be given to amendment of the National Curriculum aimed at valuing cultural diversity and preventing racism, in order better to reflect the needs of a diverse society.' This book is an excellent tool to help do this as, by emphasising Stephen Lawrence's very ordinariness, it also emphasises the horror and pointlessness of racial violence.
